unsteady jpeg images ( images with distortion )
Question
What can be the reason for the unsteady ( not sure about the word, because my bad english ) images as described following?
Considerations:
- My first TWiki ( and support ) time.
- I need motion-daily because my IP-TV100 ( grey image problem ).
- Missing options not listed in conf files are not use or are commented.
- Problems DOES NOT occur with netcam images, just with USB cams (both).
- "best" image is where the problem can be seen.
- Watching Cambozola view, sometimes, you can see the unsteady images too.
- The problem occurs in different number of pixels, I mean some pictures are worst than the example or, sometimes, a little better.
- There are images saved with NO problems too.
- I am using a Pentium II 266 with 192MBRam.
- Same server runs Motion and Apache 1.3.x with nph-mjprox ( last version ), to allow Cambozola to use port 80.
- No unexpected messages at log files.
- I use just used ./configure and motion is installed in /usr/local/
About config files:
thread1.conf and thread2.conf
- Differs only in: target_dir, videodevice e webcam_port
- USB Cameras using spca5xx module for both - same chipset
- Two USB controllers, one onboard (Intel) and another PCI card.
thread3.conf
- thread1.conf: thread1.conf ( see verbatim about thread2.conf )

Answer
All you have done seems right. I cannot see how Motion can create these images.
To me this can only be a driver issue.

Answer
I will try a new driver version ( if exists for
V4L1 - spca5xx ) and a new kernel (2.6).
In some days I post results here.
Thank you for your attention.

Upgrading kernel will take more time than I expected.
I had a lot of troubles upgrading.
I will be back as soon as possible.

Upgraded to driver spca5xx version 00.57.11 (20060402), but still with kernel 2.4.31.
Unsuccessfull, the problem remains.
Last version 0.60.00 does not compile.
Tried to contact driver author, but it appears to be busy, because there was no response.
As soon as possible I will try to install 2.6.x kernel again.

Michel suggested me to try a more powerful server, because my problem could be a weak machine. :-)
I borrowed a new server ( I hope for at least four month ): a P4 3.2Ghz with 1GB RAM.
It is using a new Slackware 11 and spca5xx-20060501 driver, with a 2.6.17.13-smp kernel.
In the last 24 hours, the problem has gone. No unsteady jpeg images. Good jpegs. :-).
Just now ( 18-10-2006 ) I changed to the new driver gspcav1-20060925.tar.gz and I will keep testing.
I will return as soon as I have new results.

Until now ( from 18-10-2006), jpegs are fine. There were NO more problems.
Just now ( 20-10-2006 ), I upgraded to new motion-3.2.7.
I will keep testing, but I think the problem is really solved. My poor PII 266 is now just moving an experimental camera. :-D
I will start saving all jpeg images from each moviment detection ( today I just save the best picture ).
I believe that my new server will handle this new feature.
For awhile, thanks to Kenneth and Michel for helping me.
