Motion - Support Question 2007x 08x 07x 212845

Codec not found: Success

Question

Hi,

I am trying to run motion with the following settings: "ffmpeg_cap_new on" "ffmpeg_video_codec msmpeg4"

However I get the error listed below:
----------------------------------------------------
[0] Processing thread 0 - config file motion_webcam.conf
[1] Thread is from motion_webcam.conf
[1] Thread started
[1] motion-httpd/3.2.3 running, accepting connections
[1] motion-httpd: waiting for data on port TCP 8080
[1] Started stream webcam server in port 8081
[1] Codec not found: Success
Segmentation fault
----------------------------------------------------

If I run it with "ffmpeg_cap_new off", motion runs fine and streams video on the webcam server.

I cannot see what ffmpeg version I have. It is coming up as SVN-rUNKNOWN (svn version is 1.4.2), but the versions of ffmpeg compoenents are: libavutil version: 1d.49.3.0 libavcodec version: 1d.51.38.0 libavformat version: 1d.51.10.0

Any clues on how I can fix this issue with motion?

Thanks, Jas

Environment

Motion version: 3.2.3
ffmpeg version:
Libraries: ffmpeg, mysql
Server OS: kernel 2.6.21

Answer

An update on this issue: Reinstalled ffmpeg from source and latest (3.2.8) motion and the error goes away. Although there is no error and video is streamed to the webserver, it does not create the mpeg file.

Please paste your motion.conf file , also take a look to logs files or even better run motion in verbose mode

./motion -n -d 9

-- AngelCarpintero - 09 Aug 2007

I found out that motion was compiled without ffmpeg support. "make" could not find the ffmpeg header files under "/usr/include/ffmpeg". Since the header files were under "usr/local/include/ffmpeg", I changed the include path in the Makefile manually and ran "make" and "make install". It is getting the correct ffmpeg files now but I get the following note while compiling motion:

ffmpeg.c:26:4: warning: #warning **************************************************
ffmpeg.c:27:4: warning: #warning Your version of FFmpeg is newer than version 0.4.8
ffmpeg.c:28:4: warning: #warning Newer versions of ffmpeg do not support MPEG1 with
ffmpeg.c:29:4: warning: #warning non-standard framerate. MPEG1 will be disabled for
ffmpeg.c:30:4: warning: #warning normal video output. You can still use mpeg4 and
ffmpeg.c:31:4: warning: #warning and mpeg4ms which are both better in terms of size
ffmpeg.c:32:4: warning: #warning and quality. MPEG1 is always used for timelapse.
ffmpeg.c:33:4: warning: #warning Please read the Motion Guide for more information.
ffmpeg.c:34:4: warning: #warning Note that this is not an error message!
ffmpeg.c:35:4: warning: #warning **************************************************

However, motion still stops with a slightly different error when "ffmpeg_cap_new on".

Here is my motion.conf file. Some of the settings are commented from it and moved into the thread1.conf file which is also included. Also I have upgraded to 3.2.9 version of motion from svn.

I'm having a similar problem - running a SAA7134 capture card with an old security camera on the composite input.

Running motion 3.2.7 and .8 didn't help, so I tried SVN which is 3.2.9.

The process seems to be happy with writing the snapshot jpg, and appending a frame to a timelapse mpg, but when motion is detected it fails with "Codec not found: Input/Output error"

Host is Debian Lenny, C1700 with 512 Mb.

I have noticed that motion generates a CPU load of 50-70% compared to 20% on the old celeron 566 I used to run as a server. Probably not related.

Here's a condensed version of my config:

Of course motion has been running happily for ~2 years, and in the couple days its been off, my mailbox gets smashed. Bloody Murphy's law.

Motion svn -r228 has a patch to avoid that motion segfault but not yet anything to work around ffmpeg package of debian Lenny. I think that debian's package it totally broken somewhere.

Updated !

debian has removed mpeg* encoders in his packages :
