Composite camera capture resolution?

Question

I have NTSC composite cameras and a capture card. Works well since I upgraded to a BT capture board with one chip per camera.

I'm currently capturing 640x480. My camera has specs of 520 lines (probably optimistic). Am I gaining any resolution at all by capturing at 640?

Am I correct that 480 should always be used as the height to get maximum resolution?

Paste in your error messages, config settings, terminal window output etc in this text field.

Environment

Motion version: 3.2.11
ffmpeg version:
Libraries: ffmpeg, mysql, postgresql
Server OS: Ubuntu kernel 2.6.19

Answer

Jon , you have to check your capture card specs ... but i bet that is adopted as standard for NTSC capture 480 horizontal lines, so it's max value for height

and 720 for width.

About lines of horizontal resolution ( TVL )
