How to set txt file as output

Question

I want to log time and date every time the webcam detects motion, but I have no particular use for images. The data need to be generated automatically to a convenient format like txt or excel to allow for subsequent statistical (numerical) analysis. I can accept that image files are saved as a biproduct even though it seems redundant.

I'm using Ubuntu 11.10. I didn't download Motion yet because I'm not sure it has the feature I'm looking for. Considering this software runs only in the terminal, please talk to me as if I'm a ten year old girl. I'm not a programmer.
