How to reduce false motion alarms

Question

I configured motion and it works but there are too many false alarms, about 3 per hour. Each false alarm consists of 1 to 3 jpg images and the video is anywhere from 0 to 1 second long. Is there an easy parameter to disregard motion that does not exceed these minor variables?

Specifically, I want to disregard motion alarms where there are less than 'x' number of jpg images or less than 'y' seconds of video. It would sure solve my problem if there is a parameter to do that.

Thank you.
