Motion - Bug Report 2004x 10x 24x 140232

BUG: Trouble capturing ffmpeg movie 640x480 at 25fps.

I have trouble capturing ffmpeg movie 640x480 @ 25fps. I have bt878 card (Hauppauge WinTV? Express), AMD 2000+ processor and 512MB of memory. I'm using Linux kernel version 2.6.9-rc3 with kraxel bttv patch. Debian GNU/Linux Sarge (testing) distribution. FFMpeg tools are from ftp.nerim.net, and version is 0.4.8-sarge0.0. Symptoms are dropped frames in mpeg/avi files, as seen on frame counter on the bottom right corner. About 1-10 dropped frames in 2 second. I have tried with lower resolutions and codecs, but no change.

Another problem is, when trying to capture 768x576 @ 25fps, the resulting mpeg file is fast-forward like movie.

Test case

Environment

Motion version: 3.1.16
Shared libraries: curl, xmlrpc, ffmpeg, mysql, postgresql
Server OS: Debian GNU/Linux Sarge

Follow up

We are in the process of optimizing motion.

And we will also eventually have motion made for ffmpeg-0.4.9 (mpeg4 only). So I propose you try again when the next versions are released.

Fix record

No point keeping this open. It is obviously a performance problem which is continuously being addressed and has been addresssed by many changes in the 3.1.18 snap series.

However there is a limit to what can be done even with fast computers.

Feel free to continue adding to this report even if it is in released state.

The ffmpeg-0.4.9 is available in 3.1.18_snap8 MotionRelease3x1x18snap8
