Quickcam VC garbled in motion, not in other v4l programs

Question

I'm using a Quickcam VC as well as a Quickcam Messenger. The VC, which is black and white, works fine in gqcam through the v4l interface, but in motion the image is not an image; it's mostly green with a lot of horizontal lines, which makes me think that it's being treated as a color stream when it's not.

Motion version:	3.2.3
ffmpeg version:	0.4.8
Libraries:	ffmpeg, mysql, postgresql
Server OS:	kernel 2.6.13
