Using motion as a tool to log amount of motion

Question

I would like to use motion to create a log-file containing the degree of motion. since there is a threshhold in the configuration I assume that motion can distinguish between little and a lot of motion. I would like to just paste the amount of motion into a file (the best would be the average over a amount of time, like once a minute, but every kind of log-file will do) like this:

motion (here are unknown commands) > motionlog.txt

Is there any command for motion just to output that value and to pipe it into a file using the terminal? I don't actually wan'T any video recorded or send, but if that is unavoidable, one can always put that into dev/null...

Does anybody know what i can do to achive this?

Paste in your error messages, config settings, terminal window output etc in this text field.

Environment

Motion version: 3.2.12
ffmpeg version:
Libraries: ffmpeg, mysql, postgresql
Server OS:
